About Glamboo
How it all started
It all started in lockdown of 2020, when hairdressers were nowhere to be found and the ‘natural’ look prevailed, Glamboo was born out of MY hair despair!
In desperation I began to research how to improve the look and condition of my hair and I came across silk pillowcases, which everyone agreed were amazing at improving the condition of your hair and skin (whilst sleeping, which meant I had to do very little). I immediately set about borrowing one to try out, as I wanted to see the results for myself before spending £££. I was not disappointed, my hair looked like it did before I went to sleep and was smooth and tangle free on waking and my skin did not have sleep wrinkles, it also felt much less dry in the morning. I then also tried it out on my nine year old daughter, who has naturally very curly hair,, which is literally a knot after sleeping and had the same results..... I was so impressed...... I was sold..... until I did my research.....
After my research I felt unable to buy one as I was morally conflicted, on one hand it was such a wonderful product and my hair and skin loved it so much, but on the other hand it came with the death of 100’s of silk worms in order to make my single pillowcase (many thousands of silk worms die to produce 1kg of silk, gassed or baked in their cocoons - which then causes the silk cocoons to unravel, except in the case of Ahimsa silk, which is very rare and comes at a cost that reflects this). It was a huge dilemma for me as although I really wanted to have my best hair day, every day, ethically I just couldn’t do it and financially paying £100+ for a genuine Ahimsa silk pillowcase was beyond my budget, so I continued my research.... there had to be something.....
At this point my idea of starting a business, should I find an ethical alternative that was directly comparable to silk was beginning to form.
I researched various materials for six months and began to see that Bamboo Lyocell was an entirely comparable alternative to silk in every way. BUT all Bamboo fabrics are not created equally, there is more information about that on the material page if you are interested. I eventually managed to source a supplier of superior quality Bamboo Lyocell, after many months of speaking to scores of suppliers who promised Bamboo Lyocell but were actually going to supply me with Bamboo Rayon/Viscose. The clue was in the cost, as only a handful of companies actually make Bamboo Lyocell worldwide it is usually a minimum of double the cost of Bamboo Rayon/Viscose, similar to Silk v Ahimsa Silk.
Eventually, after nearly a year, I ordered my first samples and “Hallelujah” I’d found the material in which to produce my Glamboo beauty pillowcases.
